The Workshops

The Workshops are 300 and 400 level courses required for the completion of the Creative Writing minor/concentration. The department offers workshops in different genres (poetry, fiction, translation). Any student pursuing a creative writing minor/concentration is required to complete 2 Workshop courses.

Translation Workshop

This will be an intensive pen-on-paper – physical or digital – approach to practical translation of fiction, non-fiction, poetry or any other form. Students will work on producing 15,000 words in translation from a language of their choice into English. We will be translating every week, sharing our translations with one another, critiquing them, and solving translation-related problems that we encounter through discussion and debate. Since this is a workshop, feedback and suggestions to the work being done by the entire class will be a crucial aspect of this course.

Students should have completed the Introduction to Creative Writing Course.

Fiction Workshop

This workshop is like a laboratory for working writers. The focus, of course, will be on generating and polishing new work. We will write in each class, share new work with peers and help each other to develop early drafts with honest, critical feedback. Students should complete “Introduction to Creative Writing” before enrolling in this course. This workshop will focus on fiction.
