English and Performing Arts Major
The interdisciplinary major in English and Performing Arts examines the lines between literature and performance to explore how the two interact, and influence each other. Students will be exposed to a vast array of literature alongside a range of courses exploring a wide gamut of performance modes in theatre. This interdisciplinary major combines critical thinking, participation and performativity.
Curriculum Structure and Credit Requirements
To complete an interdisciplinary major in English and Performing Arts, a student must do 9 English courses, 5 stand-alone Performance Studies courses, and 2 cross-listed courses. The course break-up is as follows:
9 English Courses:
2 Gateways
Forms of Literature
Introduction to Literary Theory
Any 2 of 4 Survey courses
Early British Literature
Literature in the Age of Empire
Postcolonial Literatures
Indian Literatures
5 Electives:
1 Critical Thinking Seminar*
1 1000/2000-level electives**
2 3000-level electives
1 4000-level elective from the Global and Indian Shakespeare bucket
*The Critical Thinking Seminar is a requirement for batches from the incoming Undergraduate Batch of 2023. Previous batches can count a CTS towards their interdisciplinary major, but they are not required to do so. Instead, they can fulfill this requirement by taking another 1000/2000-level elective.
**English majors can take a maximum of ONE approved language course in an approved language (Sanskrit, Persian, Greek, Latin, Old English) instead of one of their required 1000/2000-level electives.

5 stand-alone performing arts courses out of which two are the following required courses:
PA-1003 Developing Performance Skills
PA-1009 Performing Arts Practices
The other three courses may be chosen from any of the other performing arts courses on offer during a particular semester
*co-curricular courses and cross-listed courses cannot be counted as credits in the performing arts credit segment of the Interdisciplinary Major
