The Dasharupakam, a tenth century text on theatre, forms the basis of theoretical knowledge for this course. Through the prism of this work, the students will be introduced to a large part of the major canon of Sanskrit plays. These plays will be read in English and will form the basis for a series of theatre improvisations using various techniques derived from a variety of South Asian performing traditions. The course culminates in the performance of a short Sanskrit play.
