Title: “Science on the Move: How Mobile Pedagogy Shapes Human Capital”

Abstract:  While many developing economies have made progress in providing access to education, the provision of quality education that delivers life-long learning, learning- how-to-learn, and developing the ability to apply knowledge to unfamiliar circumstances is essentially absent. This is often due to the low capacity and skills of local teachers to break out of the mould of rote education. In this paper, we explore if an alternate discovery-based pedagogy could be 'transported' to rural settings. In collaboration with the Agastya foundation, we conduct a randomized controlled trial in public schools in Uttar Pradesh (UP) to evaluate an intervention that provides, through portable science laboratories, a pedagogy aimed at a scientific approach to learning. We find that such an intervention can lead to an improvement in students’ personal/behavioural factors, academic engagement, and academic/test scores.
