Pioneering Change: The Journey of the Young India Fellowship at Ashoka University
Karan Bhola, Director of Young India Fellowship (YIF), reflects on a decade of innovation and the role of YIF in Ashoka University’s evolution into a hub for transformative education
As the Director of the Young India Fellowship (YIF) at Ashoka University, it is both an honour and a privilege to reflect on the incredible journey of this pioneering programme. YIF has laid a robust foundation for Ashoka University, setting a benchmark in multidisciplinary education and transforming the landscape of higher education in India. As we celebrate a decade of Ashoka University, it is fitting to acknowledge the profound impact of YIF, which precedes the university and has shaped over 2200 alumni across 28+ countries.
My own journey with YIF began as a Young India Fellow, and it has been a remarkable homecoming to be leading the programme as its Director. Having previously led YIF Outreach and Admissions and serving as the founding President of Ashoka University’s Alumni Association, my experiences have given me a deep understanding of the Fellowship’s ethos. My time at Harvard University, where I pursued a master’s degree in Higher Education Administration as a Fulbright Scholar, further enriched my perspective on innovative education models and the importance of equity and inclusion.
The first year of leading YIF has been a profound learning experience. Each day has brought new insights, and I am grateful for the wisdom shared by both the team and the Fellows. One of the most important affirmations has been the necessity of centring the Fellowship around the Fellows. The Fellowship is the Fellows, and this must be reflected in our design, thought, and actions.
Engaging closely with Fellows through office hours and smaller group meals has been one of the most fulfilling aspects of my role. We have also leveraged the integrated Team YIF set up to adopt a more data-driven and equitable approach. This has led to more scholarships and the introduction of exceptional aid for the 2024 cohort, reflecting our commitment to equity and inclusion.
My previous role in Outreach and Admissions for YIF significantly prepared me for my current position. As a former Fellow, I have always felt a strong responsibility towards YIF. This personal connection allows me to empathise with Fellows and make informed decisions. My experiences as a Teaching Assistant and my longstanding association with the Alumni Association have also enabled me to understand the evolution of the YIF experience.
The qualitative and quantitative insights gained from admissions have played out beautifully during the Fellowship. This full-circle experience reaffirms our conviction in our decision-making and highlights the unpredictability and potential of our Fellows.
My time at Harvard University reinforced my commitment to transforming higher education in India. Exploring innovative education modules and contrasting the American and Indian education systems provided valuable insights. A significant realisation was the importance of creating an environment where students feel a sense of belonging. This learning is now integral to how we function at YIF, ensuring that we address issues of equity and inclusion effectively.
In a constantly evolving educational landscape, YIF remains relevant through its multidisciplinary approach and strong alumni legacy. YIF has always encouraged thinking across disciplines, allowing Fellows to study a diverse range of subjects simultaneously. This unique blend, coupled with our mission to groom socially conscious change-makers, sets YIF apart.
Looking ahead, there are three key elements for YIF’s future: investing in Fellows’ success, integrating with the larger institution, and rethinking intake. We aim to support Fellows in achieving their visions of success, foster greater integration with Ashoka University’s ecosystem, and adapt the intake process to reflect the diverse experiences of applicants.
As we celebrate Ashoka University’s 10th anniversary, the enduring legacy of the Young India Fellowship stands as a testament to its transformative impact. We will continue to nurture change-makers and leaders for the 21st century. Together, we will push boundaries, stay ahead of the times, and ensure that YIF remains an accessible and equitable platform for global changemakers to build their journeys.
