PhD in Sociology and Anthropology, Ashoka University
Abhishruti Sarma is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology. Her research focuses on human-animal-forest relationships along the Eastern Himalayas, specifically in Arunachal Pradesh and parts of Nagaland and Assam in northeast India. Her ongoing research examines the ways in which the bos frontalis, a bovine species endemic to the region, is entangled in practices of exchange, consumption, care, and conservation by local communities—influenced by the state, conservationist groups, local councils and religious organizations among others. Her academic interests broadly include socio-cultural and environmental anthropology, animal studies and multispecies ethnography, as well as political ecology. Prior to joining Ashoka for her Ph.D. in 2023, she completed her BA (Hons.) in English Literature from the University of Delhi in 2018 and her MA in Sociology from Ambedkar University, Delhi in 2020.
