Madhavan Nair Rajeevan

Prof. M. N. Rajeevan has about 38 years of experience in research and operational duties related to weather and climate services. He had served the India Meteorological Department (National Weather Agency) for 21 years. At IMD, he worked on weather forecasting and climate services including long range monsoon forecasting, development of prediction tools and climate data sets. He then moved on to the Indian Space Research Organization and to the Ministry of Earth Sciences. For a brief period, he was the Director, Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune.

During December 2015 to July 2021, he worked as the Secretary to the Government of India, Ministry of Earth Sciences, one of the longest tenures as the Secretary. After superannuation, he has worked as the MOES Distinguished Scientist at the National Centre for Earth Science Studies, Trivandrum, Kerala from February 2022 to Nov 2023.

He is currently with the Atria University ( a state private university, conducting liberal STEM courses), Bengaluru as its Vice Chancellor.

Prof. Rajeevan’s important research contributions are on Monsoon variability and monsoon prediction, climate change, extreme weather events and prediction of mesoscale systems.

He is a fellow of all three science academies of India (Indian Academy of Sciences, Indian National Science Academy and National Academy of Sciences) and a Member of the International Academy of Astronautics. He is currently an expert member of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Research Board, an apex body supporting the research and services of WMO.
