She was the Director of the European Molecular Biology Organization from 2010 to 2021. She studied mathematics and biology at the University of Bonn and the Heidelberg University. She pursued her PhD from the Basel Institute for Immunology. She studied B-cell activation and maturation into plasma cells as part of the immune response to infections.
